These are the closet to the original concept of the great artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens that most collectors can pursue as the Ultra High Relief coins are well beyond all but the largest numismatic budgets. This one probably never circulated, but was simply admired so many times in the past 109 years that it has a hint of wear on the delicate high points of the design. Surpassed by a single coin as MS-66 and one with the NGC star for eye appea at the same grade levell, that makes the present offering well worth notice and an exceptional bid. While the world was focused on the unfolding war in Europe, this double eagle was struck and carefully preserved, unlike virtually every other example struck in 1914 of this denomination. Merely 11,166 examples are estimated to have survived and while scarce this night, this issue is quite challenging to find even a single grade point finer. It is curious that the Philadelphia Mint production for this issue was so low, only 95,250 pieces, yet the Denver and San Francisco branch mints multiples of this figure in 1914. This must have been the result of regional demand being far higher where those mints are located, while demand from the east must have been slow tha year. Lot 1535		1920-S $20 St. Gaudens PCGS MS62. PCGS graded MS-62. The original mintage 558,000 has little revelance today, perhaps 150 pieces remain today to represent this date and mint. That makes this one of the rarest dates and mints of the entire Saint-Gaudens series, and this lovely Mint State coin will please any collector. Furthermore, roughly half of the known coins are in circulated grades, as these served time in circulation for years before being saved. A towering example of this key date that should not be missed. Mostly untoned with a few trivial specks but otherwise bathed in rich mint luster. Lot 1541		1924-S $20 St. Gaudens PCGS MS63. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. CAC Approved. This is one of the key dates to the Saint-Gaudens series as virtually all of the original mintage of nearly 3 million pieces was melted in the early to mid 1930s when gold coins were called in and melted into gold bars to be stored in Fort Knox. Furthermore, unlike many other dates, no vast quantity of these 1924-S double eagles made it over to Europe to escape this mass melting. Dates in the 1920s were particularly affected to the degree that in the 1940s it was believed that only a few examples existed of the 1924-S. In fact this date was considered the rarest Saint-Gaudens double eagle for many years, before the 1927-D won that battle as virtually no examples were found in Europe, along with the 1933 of course. Finally, in the 1960s a few 1924-S double eagles showed up in European hoards, and today this source has been the only real supplier of this issue. Nevertheless, fewer than 1,000 exist and almost all of these coins from Europe show considerable bagmarks, greatly limiting the grade. Choice examples like this are scarce but availble for a price. Key dates like this will likely remain so as most of the gold has now been gone through from Europe and this fetile field has been largerly harvested. An opportunity for the date collector! Lot 1544		1932 $20 St. Gaudens PCGS MS65. PCGS graded MS-65. A frosty untoned coin with over 1 million minted, but virtually all were melted, leaving fewer than 100 of these today. This is one of the key dates to the series of Saint-Gaudens which is seldom offered, especially this nice. With the 1933 double eagles still under litigation and likely to be off the market going forward, this is the last obtainable date for most collectors. An opportunity for the astute numismatist. In early 1933 President Roosevelt called in all the gold coins, with exceptions allowed for coin collectors. Naturally there was no premium on a coin like the 1932 double eagle, which seemed to be widely available. Add to this the fact that few collectors could afford to put away a $20 coin even at face value. Thus the vast majority of these were lost to the melting pot, leaving precious few for collectors today. An exceptional opportunity!
